Ok, so we don't have a football team and marching band. But, if intercollegiate battles are what you're looking for, join the Competition Team. If you're not the competitive type, The Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago has many clubs and activities for you to choose from.
Competition Team
The Competition Team has five members selected through tryouts. There are various types of competitions such as cold food, garde manger, dessert show platters and a competition where the students produce a four course menu as a team. In 2001, 2002, and 2003 the team members took home four medals. The team won 1st place at the state Hot Food Competition in 2003.
Cellar Club
The Cellar Club holds bi-monthly wine tastings in the CHIC Café. Members must be 21 years of age to join. There is a modest one-time membership fee and a small fee for each tasting.
Bread Guild
The Bread Guild meets every second Sunday of the month. After meeting for a short time to discuss the day's recipes, the members crank up the tunes and go to work. No pressure, no grades. We're there just to learn and have fun. No membership is required. If you want to show up one Sunday and not the next, fine.
Student Newsletter
Our entertaining and informative bi-monthly newsletter, the CHICly News features profiles of our talented instructors, graduates' awards and achievements, department and club news and important announcements. Joining the CHICly News staff is a great way to practice your writing skills.
Dining Out Club
The Dining Out Club is devoted to refining the culinary education by exposing students to a wide range of food preparation styles and ethnic ingredients. Monthly outings are open to all students and, when availability allows, their guests. The cost averages $30-40 per person, including tax and gratuity. The Dining Out Club has recently dined at such famous restaurants as Charlie Trotter's, Trio, The Peninsula Hotel, The Four Seasons, Coobah, Blue Bayou and Monsoon.
Literary Journal
"The Harvest" is our annual art and literary journal. Students submit their entries in April and a jury of faculty and staff reads and evaluates them. Laima Rastenis, 2003 winner of Career Education Corporation's Educator of the Year Award, is the editor. Winning entries are read and displayed by the students at a luncheon in the CHIC Café. Family and friends are invited.
Student Advisory Board
The Student Advisory Board organizes college-wide activities, performs community service activities and serves as a liaison between the administration and the student body. Among their recent activities:
- Cooking at the Ronald McDonald House
- Preparing meals for families in need during the holidays
- Running a food drive for the homeless and poor
- Conducting food demonstrations at The Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago open house events
- Preparing the Faculty Appreciation Dinner
